Did you know?

  • 3.29 million people suffer from disabilities. One-third of these people live below the poverty line
  • People with disabilities are one of the most marginalized groups
  • People with disabilities represent 10% of the population
  • People with disabilities are invisible citizens mostly unseen and unheard in schools, on buses, in the workplace and restaurants
  • 77% of the people with disabilities have no access to education.
  • 66% of the people with disabilities live in rural areas
  • Women with disabilities are twice as more likely to be abused than women without disabilities
  • Disability may be genetically pre-determined or may be caused by environmental conditions such as poverty, violence, unsafe working conditions, malnutrition, poor health care, lack of sanitation, neglect or abuse
  • The rate of literacy among people with disabilities is 28%
  • People with disabilities are abandoned in shelter homes and mazaars where they are victims of violence and abuse. Many exist practically as prisoners within their homes. Those who run away from homes often turn to beggary for self-support.
  • 70% of the people with disabilities are unemployed
